THEO BAGS THE BEAR NECESSITIES OF SHOPPING
If you went down to the woods, err, shopping centre recently, you were sure of a big surprise, because Sheffield Children’s Hospitals’ mascot ‘Theo the Bear’ was on hand at popular Crystal Peaks to help with a little recycling in the shape of a 100% recyclable charity shopping bag. ![]() Theo the Bear practicing some recycling Fundraising co-ordinator Glenda Kirby for the “Sheffielders CARE” team (who are working in partnership with Sheffield Children’s Hospital and local schools) commented, “It is a totally unique and environmentally friendly fundraising initiative to prove and show you’re concerned, not only about the sick and poorly children in our fantastic local hospital but our schools and the environment. The bag also has a reflective logo, which helps improve road safety as well. The money raised is shared between Sheffield Children’s Hospital and participating Sheffield schools.” She explained, “UK shoppers get through eight billion plastic bags a year. That’s 133 each for every man, woman and child. In Ireland, they recognised this and charged about 9 pence for each plastic bag. Within months, shoppers switched to either re-using their old carrier bags or buying stronger more solid ones. That’s where charibags swing into action and help the environment too. Because carrier bags are made of polyethylene, hazardous to manufacture and some believe will take over a 1000 years to decompose, the ‘charibag’ if looked after properly should last a lifetime. So the more people choose to use charibags, the more the Children’s Hospital and our local schools will benefit. Effectively, it will help reduce the unnecessary use of plastic and the ensuing impact it has on the environment which has to be good for everyone and with your help we can make even more dreams become reality for the children!” For further information, please call: t: 01302 759696 m: 07973 676942 |
