BRAMALL LANE’S FINEST AT CRYSTAL PEAKS
It’s not everyday you get a chance to meet your football heroes but that’s exactly what happened to Sam (11) and Josh Whitlan (13) and their friend Ryan Revill (11) all from Jermyn Close, Hackenthorpe when they came face to face with Sheffield United Football Club’s top striker Billy Sharp and ace defender Gary Cahill.
The ‘meet the players’ event was held at popular Shopping Centre Crystal Peaks to launch the arrival and sale of S.U.F.C. Memorabilia in the Central Atrium. Sheffield born William “Billy” Sharp, 21, started at Rotherham United as a schoolboy and signed for Sheffield United in 2002 but failed to establish himself in Neil Warnock’s’ squad, so in 2005 he went on loan to Rushden and Diamonds, scoring 9 goals then going on to score 56 goals in 95 games over two seasons at Scunthorpe’s Glandford Park. As number 24, the life-long Blades fan returned on 4th July 2007 for an undisclosed sum of what is thought to be approximately £2 million. Again, Sheffield born Gary Cahill is currently on loan from Aston Villa previously playing for Burnley and winning two of their accolades “Young Player of the Year” and “Player of the Year”. He’s also been an Under-20 international for England and his first Under-21 cap came at the new Wembley Stadium where he partnered Anton Ferdinand at the centre of defence. He joined S.U.F.C. in September on a three-month loan deal.
Said Birley Community College Schoolboy Ryan, “I was thrilled to bits to meet them both and even happier we beat Stoke 1-0 at the weekend with Gary scoring a header from a Danny Webber cross. I wanted to know if we could keep him (Cahill) until the end of the season? And why did both Sheffield clubs miss out on them early on in their careers! But he didn’t reply, he just smiled and changed the subject. Let’s hope our unbeaten run to six league games continues, come on you Blades!” 13th November 2007 Serial No. 51085
