FLOURISHING ART STUDENTS AT SHORTBROOK…

The seeds of an idea turned into a valuable pod, a new i-pod
TM , for lucky Shortbrook Community Primary School student Jasmine Darlow, aged 11, from Year 6, and artistic green fingers produced olive tinted shopping vouchers for two other lucky students; Sheldan Williams, 11, also from Mr. Gibbs form, and Hari Robinson age 9, from Year 4, Mrs. Connolly’s class, when they became outright winners in the ‘Yorkshire In Bloom Colouring Competition’ held at Crystal Peaks recently.

The Sheffield Shopping Centre held the contest not only to fit in with the Westfield Northway community based schools’ environmentally friendly Key Stage curriculum but also to brighten up the Central Atrium when the Yorkshire In Bloom judges came to view both Beighton and the Centre’s spectacular entries earlier this year. Kim Jones from the Centre Management Team said, “The coincidence was amazing. We rang Liz Payne the schools Learning Mentor at Shortbrook to see if they would like to become involved and she immediately said they were having an Environments Week in a fortnights time. The timing was uncanny.  Within weeks hundreds of fantastically coloured flowers came back from the children. We placed them on wobblers on our display boards for all to see, and in the gentle breeze with the swaying of the leaves you could almost imagine the flowers being alive and real. The high standard made it particularly difficult for our independent judge, Nick Felgett of Sheffield City Council’s StreetForce to pick a winner and two runners up. I sincerely hope this initiative has helped to enrich and enhance the pupils eco-understanding and I can only congratulate each and everyone who took part. Very well done Shortbrook Primary.”
