100th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION, A VERY IMPORTANT OWN GOAL

100 not out and it’s not cricket! The Sheffield
and District Referees Association are celebrating a milestone in their history – their centenary year and Shopping Centre Crystal Peaks are proud to be sponsoring a part of it.

Ever since 1907 and as a tribute and achievement to the foresight of the founder members, S&DRA membership has continued throughout the years up to and including the present day, either as referees or assistant referees and in so doing upheld the Referees Association motto: ‘Service Before Self”. “Without referees we would have no games.” Said James Hope-Gill, Chief Executive, Sheffield & Hallamshire FA, “As we all know, the referee is an essential part of the game. Refereeing requires many admirable attributes including strength of character, integrity, honesty and courage. Referees also deserve and need the respect and support of all members of the football family. Over the past 100 years the S&DRA has supported thousands of referees on their individual journeys and I’m sure they’ll continue to do so in the many years to come.”
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter said, “The power of the sport is far more than symbolic, and we see this in football every day on all levels. Football brings people together, regardless of any differences in background, and it teaches us many important lessons in life. Football has transcended its beginnings as a purely ‘sporting’ event to becoming a social and cultural phenomenon. It is exactly this that you, The Sheffield and District Referees Association are working towards! You can promote communication and help heal divisions between communities and I am convinced that football can touch the world and help build a better future. Wishing you all the very best.”
Rodger K Hibbert, Chairman Sheffield and District Referees Association further commented, “To achieve our 100th birthday in today’s mulitchoice and varied sporting and leisure environment is, I think, a great achievement. Referees by their nature have truthfulness and a whole hearted commitment to ‘grass roots’ football and always step out with their utmost endeavour to do an exemplary job in the county’s many leagues and contributory leagues. We have been fortunate to see members elevated to the football championship and premiership leagues with a select number reaching the heady heights of international competition. It’s pleasing also to comment we have members who are FA Referee Instructors and FA Assessors offering advice to colleagues as they progress the promotion ladder. Alot of hard work and unselfish commitment has, over the years, been put into the making of the S&DRA - a real success story and the present membership are striving to maintain the standards set.” He added, “But I would categorically scotch the rumour that I was present at the very first meeting of the S&DRA.  Here’s wishing you all a hugely successful and memorable centenary.”
