HEALTH4KIDZ SHINES AT CRYSTAL PEAKS

A Sheffield woman is on a quest to challenge childhood obesity by providing an education and information service on weight loss that young people really need - rather than what some so-called professionals think they need - and to prove it she brought her roadshow ‘Health4Kidz’ to Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre last Sunday. Qualified nurse Kath Sharman has created a pioneering programme called SHINE - Self Help Independence Nutrition & Exercise based on her real life experiences of running a weight and mind management programme, with a proven track record aiding overweight children and young people since 2003.

Kath and her team of 5, consisting of a nutritionist, counsellor, school nurse, school teacher and 2 mental health workers encourage healthier lifestyles amongst young people in the prevention and treatment of unhealthy eating and clearly spell out the associated future health risks to them, such as coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes as well as advice on how to tackle feelings of low self esteem, lack of confidence, social isolation and depression. Organiser Kath Sharman said, “We came along to help any young person take control of their health and it’s not just about physical changes but mental well being too. Its’ great to create his type of awareness in a local community Shopping Centre and the feedback we’ve received from concerned individuals has been highly encouraging. Today children are at a greater risk of dying at an earlier age than their parents. Obesity now affects 27% of girls and 20% of boys according to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. So with my background and Masters Degree in Counselling Studies I just had to come up with ideas, strategies and some tools to empower young people back to health and make an everlasting change. So at Crystal Peaks for the self care skills we’ve discussed healthy eating, the benefits of exercise and even how to combat bullying. The impact we’ve made on some concerned family shoppers out for the day who took time out to talk to us about their next of kin has  been truly inspirational.”

Testimonial: ‘My name is Daniel Burkhill and I joined SHINE because I was really overweight. When I was nineteen stone and a half I was really poor at sports. When I was at school I got bullied everyday of the week so I stopped going to school for 4 years. Then I thought that I would be bullied because they had not seen me for a long time. They were being nice to me but when I went outside they were hitting me and calling me names. Then SHINE came round the corner. I went there and I have lost six stone. I made a lot of good friends. I have never been so happy in my life. When I was nineteen and a half stone I could not run and could not walk properly but since coming to Shine my life has changed. My mum and dad have also joined Shine. They have done very well and I am very proud of them. Shine is the best place in the world. THANK YOU SO MUCH.’
