BRAVERY AWARD FOR LOCAL HERO

A life saving Swallownest man is celebrating today after being honoured and named ‘MITIE Star 2007’ at a glittering black tie national award ceremony at exclusive Whittlebury Hall near Northampton in recognition of his brave efforts.

ImageDave Fletcher, 42, a Security Sergeant at Sheffield’s Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre did not hesitate for one minute when coming to the rescue of an elderly gentleman from Richmond, S13, who had collapsed near to the West Mall entrance/exit doors on his way to the transport interchange. He wasn’t breathing and had no pulse. Dave administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before using a defibrillator, which was rushed to the scene. The gentleman’s breathing was fully restored, albeit shallow. Furthermore, Dave continued dispensing life saving CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) treatment until paramedics arrived for onward submission to Rotherham District Hospital. David’s ultimate accolade comes after 8 monthly regional winners are designated. From the 96 monthly winners throughout the year, 16 hopefuls are chosen to go through to the final. At this event an overall winner is chosen to receive this prestigious award. “I was thrilled to receive a nomination and astounded at the winning outcome - as I see it as part of my everyday life - I was just doing my duty. You don’t stop to think about it – you just get on with the job in hand” said Dave “ I heard a code 3 called by my colleague Wendy Milnes and as a first aider I rushed to the scene.”

Commented Centre Manager, Chris Jones, “The consequences of the incident could have been much worse were it not for David’s swift actions. David demonstrated great spirit in the way he responded before the professional crews were in attendance. His bravery in tackling this incident, coupled with his quick presence of mind ensured that a life was saved, what greater gift could a man give to his fellow man? I feel very proud for him and I am absolutely delighted that David, our well-known and respected professional Security Sergeant has been recognised for his outstanding reaction to an emergency situation.  Many, many heartfelt congratulations to a well deserved colleague.”
