 A BRUSH WITH BOLLYWOOD …

Pupils and budding young Picasso’s and Cézanne’s from Richmond Park Way’s Athelstan Primary School will be completely ‘hung up’ on art these coming months thanks to their specially commissioned all-weather Town Hall Balcony Banner sponsored by popular Shopping Centre, Crystal Peaks for this year’s Sheffield Children’s Festival.

Form tutor Anne Winters’ Year 5 pupils have had a brush with contemporary and nationally respected ‘artist in residence’ Karen Woods from Wirksworth who passed on her expertise to help completion of the hand-painted 4-metre X 3-metre semi circular canvas - with the big banner being positioned in pride of place for a full 3 months.  On Monday, June 4th it’ll be officially handed over to The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Arthur Dunworth. And this year it’s even more colourful than ever thanks to the Children’s Festival’s theme, “Bollywood”, in celebration of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards, being held just 5 days later at Sheffield Arena on 9th June. Commented Anne, “The children have had lots of fun, researching, story boarding and sketching all the different and complex design elements involved in creating this brightly coloured ‘Bollywood’ scenario for the centre of our City.

The Indian film industry produces more films and grosses more in ticket sales per year than any other film industry in the world. While films of all genres are produced in India, the focus of this collage is the lavish cultural and spiritual heritage rooted in the industry of Mumbai, or Bollywood. We included Lord Krishna who delivered His famous message known as the Bhagavad-Gita and Ganesha (or Ganesh), the elephant-headed god plus Brahma, because within the Hindu trinity of Vishnu and Shiva, Brahma is the creator. It has truly been an ‘art-istory’ lesson spanning thousands of years!”
Pauline Eveleigh, Festival Director and Cultural Events Manager for Sheffield City Council, said: “There is quite a buzz about as Yorkshire begins to prepare for the Bollywood Awards. Linked to this major event thousands of children and young people around Sheffield are learning about the culture of the Indian sub-continent as they work with artists, dramatists, dancers and musicians in preparation for this year’s Children’s Festival. Now in its fifteenth year the Festival promises to be an extravagant celebration of our youngsters’ skills inspiring everyone’s imagination. The events are so creative, unusual and imaginative they will bring amazing opportunities for the 20,000 or so children taking part. It will also provide the city with a feast of wonderful entertainment.” She added “Over the years the Festival has gained a fantastic reputation for the high quality of work planned and executed in our local schools by our ‘in-residence’ artists. They pass on their substantial knowledge and expertise to truly enhance the skills of young people and this wonderfully rich and colourful banner is no exception. It proves that team building, togetherness and a local contribution not only add to the cultural life of the city but moreover makes a lasting difference in the lives of those who take part and will certainly brighten up Surrey Street and Norfolk Street for many months to come.”
