TONY’S BAGGED THE CUP !

It has been victoriously lifted by Sheffield Wednesday, Chelsea, Manchester United, Middlesborough, and Liverpool to name a few. It has been called The Football League Cup, The Milk Cup and The Worthing Cup over the years and when footie fan Tony Willoughby from Killamarsh went down to the shops he scored an own goal - with much more than groceries – he raised the gleaming Carling Cup!

ImageThe much sought after trophy called extra time on Wembley and shot into Crystal Peaks’ J. Sainsbury on a City by City brewery promotional tour in which fans could get their photograph taken with the cherished silverware and later placed in a special presentation frame.
The League Cup competition was the brainchild of Alan Hardaker ‘Godfather of Football’, who was secretary of the Football League from 1957 to 1979.  Local interest came with the inaugural competition, in the 1960-61 season, as Second Division Rotherham United finished runners-up to Aston Villa. 16 years later as if to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee year, 1977, the tournament conjured up something special: the longest ever cup final marathon. Aston Villa and Everton slogged it out over 330 minutes of football history at three different venues: Wembley, Hillsborough and Old Trafford. By the time they had finished, the turnstiles had clicked over 200,000 times and Villa had won an unprecedented third League Cup. Sheffield Wednesday won the trophy in 1991 (the first under the moniker of The Rumbelows Cup) against Manchester United but became unfortunate bridesmaids against Arsenal in 1993 (2-1) who won the first ever League Cup/FA Cup double. Commented Fettler Grinder Tony, 48, from Nethermoor Drive; “All this blue ribbon is a little disconcerting even though it is Chelsea’s, as I’m a Blade through and through. It would be really nice to think one day Sheffield United will be raising this beauty and red ribbons can hang from the handles … and not in the too distant future, please.”
