THEY THINK IT’S ALL OVER, IT IS NOW…The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Cllr. Jackie Drayton doesn’t flag easily, except recently, when she became guest of honour, in pole position, as one of the prestigious judges at the recent Crystal Peaks, ‘World Cup Flag Colouring Competition’. Recently on display in the Sheffield Shopping Centre’s West Mall was over 20 local schools exhibiting hundreds of the 2006 FIFA World Cup flags, which were ‘flying high’ in shop windows. Pupils illustrated all 32 flags from across the globe of the teams making up the competitive field in the six continents, four-yearly finals. Sadly, like the knock-out championship itself, only one team, or form, could be the outright winner, securing over 1000 pounds worth of computer equipment for their school and it was Thornbridge Avenue’s Birley Primary School (S12) who scored a decisive and direct goal with the judges for the free kit! Centre Manager, Chris Jones commented, “It’s a true delight to see the interaction of numerous school forms and children working together on a project that encompasses not only colouring the 32 featured World Cup football teams’ national flags but also features insights into those countries currency, demographics and economy – in so doing increasing the children’s knowledge and understanding of the wider world, its’ geography and creating a fun whilst highly educational vehicle. And from schoolroom to television it is the schools team spirit of taking part that has created all the winning scenarios. The highly coloured mall looks resplendent as testified by the numerous comments from passers-by. He added, “It’s good to point out, as an artist herself, our lovely Lord Mayor was especially impressed with each and every schools’ differing artistic interpretations, particularly the collages and use of differing paints – from watercolour to acrylics, and the imaginative materials used from papier-mâché to rice and grain. All highly creative representations and well done to each and every entrant.”
