CRYSTAL PEAKS, SCALING NEW HEIGHTS FOR CANCER CHARITY

The Peaks headed for The Peaks – Yorkshire’s three highest in fact, in an area of natural outstanding beauty and limestone pavements, to take on “The Three Peaks of Yorkshire 12 Hour Challenge”, thus raising over £1100.00 pounds of funding for Sheffield’s Macmillan Cancer Support during their arduous non-stop charity feat.

The intrepid team of adventure seekers consisting of 6 long distance walkers, set off from the popular Shopping Centre in a bid to complete the 26 mile circuit including the climb up to Pen-y-Ghent (694m / 2277 feet), Whernside (736m / 2415 feet) and Ingleborough (724m / 2372 feet).

Some team members are distance and mountain veterans, having previously completed the gruelling 192-mile Coast-to-Coast, 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall, The West Highland Way (95 miles) and most recently both The White Rose Challenge Walk (40 miles) and the 67-mile perimeter of The Isle of Wight.

“You could say that this demanding challenge was another ‘peak’ performance” commented Centre Management P.A. Kim Jones, “and undertaken because it was for such a worthwhile cause. As the guidebook says, ‘the ascent of the three peaks in one day without using mechanical transport has been a recognised feat of endurance for almost a century’. The total climb is over 5,200 feet and it can be pretty hostile in poor weather conditions so you need to be quite fit and have a little outdoor experience before you go. On this occasion though the opposite was true, it was a beautiful red-hot scorching sunny day which brought its’ own problems... sun stoke and dehydration! Fortunately we carried lots of fluids and took just enough breaks not to let it effect us all successfully completing the route.”

She added, “There’s no finer feeling than touching the trig point on top of Ingleborough knowing you have climbed all Three Peaks. I was delighted to reach the Pen-y-Ghent Café, punch the antique clock card machine in under 12 hours and was elated to become a true member of the Three Peaks of Yorkshire Club. Made all the finer by collecting my outstanding sponsorship money! There were other benefits too. First and foremost, we raised a significant amount of money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Secondly, the challenge has generated a tremendous team spirit, not only amongst those undertaking the challenge, but the many others at Crystal Peaks who provided support in organising the logistical elements. ”
