BLADES CUT THROUGH CROWDS AT CRYSTAL PEAKS

Hundreds of fans dressed in their beloved red and white striped shirts thronged the malls at Crystal Peaks to gain an autograph… or three - plus a photo with their favourite Sheffield United player.  Defender Mikele Leigertwood along with forward Steve Kabba, and midfielder Colin Kazim-Richards were all on hand to score a terrific home goal with the supportive crowd of loyal south Sheffield fans whilst attending the Shopping Centre’s Streetwise Sports store.

The personal appearances were to celebrate the Blades promotion to the Premiership (after Leeds failed to beat champions Reading at Elland Road) and the launch of a hugely popular S.U.F.C. concession at the Streetwise Sports store based within the Central Atrium. Team mascot Captain Blade was on hand to see fair play and keep the loyal and tolerant fans amused whilst they waited patiently to meet their idols.

One dedicated fan, Connor Thompson age 11, stood out from the crowd with his distinctive Sheffield Wednesday training kit on! “Why?” He commented. “Because I’m a Blade. My personal favourite is Rob Hulse but I love the Coca-Cola Kid, Colin and can’t wait to meet him.”

Connor explained, “I was scouted by both Wednesday and United whilst I was playing for Sunday League Division A Under 10’s – a top team called Greenhill and Low Edges Junior Football Club – both had their eye on me and wanted me for some time, especially as I was the seasons top goal scorer. After words with my brilliant Manager, Frazer, who I owe an awful lot to, said being dropped by a team you love would be more hurtful – therefore I chose the Owls, who’ve been simply magnificent ever since I started with them in February 2004.  I play Centre Mid Field and train 3 times a week for 2 hours at Middlewood Road and now, blue or red, I just love the sport of football and always want to be on the pitch.”

Manager Lisa Crossland excitedly said on the day, “I’ve never see so many camera phones and digital camera’s being used all at the same time, I was overwhelmed by the response. Dedicated fans brought permanent marker pens to gain a personalised autograph on each piece of kit. It is the first time The Blades have been in the top flight for 12 years and I hope it can continue because we have both United’s home kit and white away kit too, the club’s leisurewear range for spring, summer, autumn and winter (!) - plus mugs, stationery, baby wear and a selection of luggage –you name it, if it’s red and white and Sheffield United we’ll have it – even players in real life.”
