SPONSORED HOMELESS FOR THE NIGHT…

For the recent ‘Mall Sleep-In’ at Crystal Peaks it was a choice of either a card board box or a roll-out mat when a 52–strong group of volunteers and staff from the Sheffield Shopping Centre slept rough for the night on behalf of Sheffield’s Cathedral Breakfast and Archer Project in a bid to raise funds for, and awareness of, nearly one hundred homeless people in Sheffield.

Trudi Cummins, Senior Surveyor of Crystal Peaks’ Managing Agents Cushman & Wakefield explained, “I wanted 3 of my Centres, Crystal Peaks working with the Archer Project, St. Johns in the heart of Leeds aiding the St. Georges Crypt and Bolton’s Crompton Place helping an project called ‘Urban Outreach’ to undertake the initiative of homelessness as I felt this would make more of an impact on the regional issues faced. Although homelessness is a nationwide problem, which I see all to well on my travels around the properties, I thought regionally, by working together,  we could help better in terms of geographical area, responsiveness and assistance.

She added, “I can't really pinpoint when it came about, it just occurred to me one day in discussion over disaffected young people, the homeless, vulnerable groups, rough sleepers - even the roofless and the appalling conditions they must have to cope with on a daily basis, then I thought of the sleep out in Australia along the malls and it all kind of tied things together as a common thread with the Aussie retailers. In short it had a heartfelt snowball effect that just seemed to fit right for us too!  I firmly believe that change can be effected through grass roots action and I think if we are able to mobilize positive people similar to those who were there on the night – be it businessmen or women or tenants, friends and associates – together, change will happen."

Apart from experiencing the element of cold, Trudi along with fellow Centre Management staff and tenants had the chance to share some experiences with those who had actually lived on the street. One of those men was Lee McAdan who said, "I tell people the type of life I'm living so they will understand our hardships but what the Archer Project provides for us in services and support is great and is powered by grassroots involvement with people in local communities like this. So thanks to everyone for making a difference.”
