FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS AT CRYSTAL PEAKS!

Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre's nominated annual charity 'Age Concern' came out fighting recently as a "Your Rights Week" Roadshow was held in the New West Mall to raise awareness of Council Tax Benefit which could cut the average pensioner’s bill by £470 a year.

'Your Rights Week' targets Pensioners who miss out on vital benefits despite high levels of pensioner poverty and rising bills, older people are more likely than any other group to miss out on the cash and it's claimed that up to 1.8 million older people are missing out. Government figures show that up to £2.9 billion lies unclaimed by older people every year. Age Concern's annual campaign was held to encourage older people across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire claim the money benefits, which are rightfully theirs.

With pension and benefit rates rising, it is more important than ever for older people to make their claim. Pension Credit, Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit and Attendance Allowance are just some of the benefits available. In some cases, pensioners could double their income by claiming the benefits they are entitled to. And despite Council Tax being a major headache for millions, Council Tax Benefit is still the most unclaimed benefit of all - with pensioners missing out on up to £870 million Council Tax Benefit each year. Ruth Davis of Age Concern in Sheffield's Castle Square, said: “So many older people are unnecessarily living in poverty. They miss out because they don’t realise that they are entitled to extra cash, don’t know how to claim, or feel there is a stigma attached to claiming means-tested benefits and would rather just ‘make do’.

“The system can seem daunting but it is definitely worth making a claim. There's lots of free help and advice if you're on a low income we'll show you how to pay less council tax or rent. Perhaps it may be information on fuel bills or health costs, or the Disability Living Allowance - here's lots of help, just contact us. In previous years, this campaign has helped many older people receive extra benefits, making a real difference to the quality of their lives."

“Benefits worth millions of pounds go unclaimed every year. We urge older people to check their entitlements to benefits today. They might be pleasantly surprised to discover what they are rightfully entitled to”.
