“SOUTH AMERICAN CIVILISATIONS” FOR SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE WITH THE LORD MAYOR’S APPROVAL . . . It was a case of 'meet me on the Town Hall steps at noon' for teacher Miss Judy Pyzer and 5, representatives from Year Y4P pupils at Rainbow Forge Primary School. Because they are to be literally ‘hung up’ on art as they, and a host of other chums at school, helped to complete a gigantic weatherproof, hand-painted ‘Town Hall’ balcony banner with nationally respected ‘artist in residence’ Hannah Dyer. The painting is all part of the Sheffield Children’s Festival 2005, and has gained massive approval from The Lord Mayor, Cllr. Roger Davison, when he popped outside his parlour to view the colourful creation unfolding before him. The 4-metre X 3-metre semi circular canvas was especially commissioned and sponsored by Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre, to mark the launch of the 13 th annual event which takes place on Saturday, June 18th (until Saturday 23rd July) with the banner placed in-situ for a full 3 months.
“It is certainly an eye catcher and won’t be missed when it’s in position over the entrance doors of the Town Hall for everyone to see! All the young budding artists and their proud parents will be inspecting it and I’m sure they’ll be excitedly saying ‘I did that bit up there!’ It’s just great to have the children’s hard work so publicly rewarded.” Exclaimed Lyn. “We’ve had lots of fun and giggles, researching, story boarding and sketching all the different and complex design elements involved in creating this brightly coloured ‘South American Civilisations’ collage for the centre of our City. Mexican masks, hummingbirds, lizards, monkeys, butterflies, toucans and tree frogs – just a few items that go into making the subject a Central and South American theme. It is a celebration of their art and culture in this sub continent. We hope very much you’ll enjoy viewing the piece.” Commented Pauline Eveleigh, Cultural Events Manager, “Over the years the Festival has gained a fantastic reputation for the high quality of work planned and executed in our local schools by our ‘in-residence’ artists. They pass on their substantial knowledge and expertise to truly enhance the skills of young people and this wonderfully rich and colourful banner is no exception. It proves that team building, togetherness and a local contribution not only add to the cultural life of the city but moreover makes a lasting difference in the lives of those who take part and will certainly brighten up Surrey Street and Norfolk Street for many months to come.” for further information, please call: t: 01302 759696 m: 07973 676942 |
