POPPIES FLOURISHING IN BURNGREAVE...A Burngreave educational project has blossomed thanks to sponsorship from Crystal Peaks - by utilising a huge 7 metre wide red 'poppy' parachute to aid understanding, play and awareness leading up to Remembrance Sunday. It was unveiled to local children at Ellesmere Children's' Centre on Maxwell Street, S4, last Friday (4/11) to mark the local Royal British Legion "Poppy Day Appeal 2005" and also provide free community learning sessions run by art, craft and performance group 'Sound Foundations'. The Sheffield Shopping Centre are also supporting other free sessions at Pye Bank School (9/11), Firs Hill Community Primary School (12/11) concluding on Monday, 14th November at Burngreave Library.
Francis Feeley, Organiser from Sound Foundations based in Rock Street said: “We've been working very closely with Creative Burngreave offering Poppy Day awareness sessions for pre school and primary schools. The gatherings have been especially created and designed to be both fun and enlightening for the children as a feature of our world and its' multicultural calendar. We've used flowers, colour and size to trigger thinking to target the younger people as to what remembrance means to them and their community today. Our mission is always to create a curriculum based, culturally appropriate and stimulating environment, because when children have fun, the by-product is knowledge and insightfulness to the world around them." Commented Centre Manager Chris Jones, "Appropriately Sheffield's Michael Vaughan, England Cricket Captain, officially launched this years Poppy Appeal, highlighting the importance of caring and support - so it was fitting for Crystal Peaks to get involved with their community work. The Royal British Legion exists not only for those Servicemen affected by the World Wars and conflicts over the years but also those injured or traumatised in more recent times. Friday's two-minute silence will be marked in the Centre as in previous years at 11am on the 11th November - the 11th Month. I believe the Poppy Appeal is as relevant today as it ever was and it is important that today's young people remember past conflicts whilst looking to the future, through understanding, education, and also compassionately continue to give to such a worthwhile cause." -ends- for further information, please call: t: 01302 759696 m: 07973 676942 |
