SHEFFIELD DUO IN 'GREAT NORTH RUN' FOR MENINGITIS

It's going to be a real feat for feet when Lowedges couple Janet and Barrie Crowther take part in the Great North Run 2005, being held on Sunday 18 September in the North East's Newcastle upon Tyne.

The couple, with a little help from Shopping Centre Crystal Peaks, are running the 13.1 mile road race known to world class sprinters as the 'GNR' for Meningitis Research Foundation to raise funds and awareness of the diesease due to the sad loss of their 17 year old daughter Rachael to meningoccal septicaemia 7 years ago.

Now in its 25th year, the 'GNR' runs from Newcastle Tyne Bridge to South Shields and, like it's big brother, the London Marathon, attracts some serious runners looking to improve upon their previous time, along with complete novices, fancy dress runners and top celebrities alike!

Said Barrie from his home in Gervase Road, "The Great North Run has become one of the most important events in the annual running calendar and holds the title of ‘biggest road race in the world’ with over 47,000 people entered. It's going to be a great adverture, a wonderful race and a fantastic chance to raise money for vital research into the causes of meningitis. Appropriately 'The Great North Run' has its own special atmosphere, which will remain long after the aches and pains of the race have been forgotten. While the road may be long, it won’t be lonely. We're doing this for our daughter, and she'll be beside us every step of the way. Our motivation is not only to gain donations for MRF (Meningitis Research Foundation) but increase the awareness to help other parents fight the killer diesease so they can save lives by noticing the all important tell tale signs. Janet and I will both be spurred on toward the beachfront finish line in South Shields to become true winners for the support of the charity, to cure the disease altogether and our very dear Rachael!"
